WHAT INSPIRES US
POLZEATH BEACH, CORNWALL
by Julie / in Inspiration
I go to this place every year because I stand on this beach and can't help smiling. I'm not a naturally jolly person. I'm not prone to feeling joyful for no apparent reason. But I do feel joyful when I stand in this spot. I've tried to find reasons for it. The view is wide, the sky is infinite, the sound of the waves roars in my ears and drowns out grumbling thoughts.
It occurred to me this year that it's such an elemental view: sky, sea, land. No trees or buildings to distract from the clean lines. Nothing for the heart to catch at or make sad.
But really I don't want to know why it makes me happy. Because the whole point is it just does. Like the poet Philip Larkin wrote in his 1946 poem "Many famous feet have trod":
"Joy has no cause:
Though cut to pieces with a knife,
Cannot keep silence."
DOES YOUR WORK PLACE BRING YOU JOY
Julie’s reflections go a long way to describe the unlikely moments which bring us joy. Part of what we do at Creamer & Sundt is find ways to bring joy into the workplace, to create moments where people connect to the role, to where they work and who they work with. While we don’t take everyone to the beach (or Cornwall, even) we are always on the look out for places which inspire the same qualities of contentment and which spontaneously bring a smile to people’s faces.
